Coffee production chain works to deploy mapping of Brazil’s coffee park

To supply the coffee sector statistical base with data on area, altitude and slope, the coffee production chain works to implement the mapping of the Brazilian coffee park. Georeferencing is an old industry demand and is being addressed as a priority agenda by the Deliberative Coffee Research and Development Committee (CDPD). During the 24th meeting, held last week, Committee members decided to consider other project proposals to map the coffee area, in addition to what was previously presented by the National Supply Company (Conab).

It was agreed that the proposals should focus on the following:
– Mapping of the national coffee park based on images;
– Survey of questions and validation of the field map and statistical validation of the mapping.
According to the Agricultural Production Coordinator of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA), Natália Fernandes, the first step is to select the best proposal that meets all the requirements in the short term. “The projects should be presented by institutions with experience in georeferencing agricultural crops and then analyzed by the CDPD”, explains Natália.

In a letter delivered to the Director of the Department of Credit, Resources and Risks of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), Vitor Ozaki, the Committee members asked that the proposals allow the delivery of digital thematic maps, by municipality, of the coffee plantations in production and formation, stratified by arabic and conilon species, for the states of Paraná, Bahia, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Goiás, Distrito Federal and Rondônia.

In addition to the CNA, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (Abic), the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé), the National Coffee Council (CNC), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa Café).) and the Procafé Foundation.
